Departments of the Library
Reference (REF)
Located on the main floor, the Reference Department houses encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, maps, biographies, pamphlets, government materials, newsletters, newspaper clippings, and books published by and about Seventh-day Adventists. Unless affixed with a three-day loan label, materials in this section should only be used in the library.

Open Stacks (OS)
The general collection (Open Stacks) is housed on the upper floor. Materials in this section can be borrowed for two weeks.

Periodicals (PER)
The Periodicals Department houses over 300 titles of current and back issues of periodicals, and our ERIC microfiche collection. The Gleaner, Observer, New York Times and Wall Street Journals can be found in this area. These materials can only be used in the Library.
The Library now has access to over 10,000 full-text journals on-line via the Internet.

Audio-Visual (AV)
The Audio-Visual Department is located on the upper floor, (with its entrance outside, to the left of the building). The following Audio-Visual material, equipment and facility are available for loan: CDs, DVDs, Audio Cassettes, Video Cassettes, Multimedia Projectors, Televisions, Video Cassette Recorders, DVD Players, Stereos, and the Audio-Visual Classroom. Except for multimedia projectors, all AV materials, equipment, and the AV classroom are without charge for use.
Audio-Visual Policies
- All Audio-Visual material, equipment and the Audio-Visual Classroom should be requested at least three (3) days in advance. Reservations must be made in person or by telephone with the audio-visual assistant at 523-2113 or extension 2113. For further assistance, contact the Audio-Visual Librarian or Library Technical Assistant at extensions 2200 and 2103 respectively.
- Requisition forms and Transfer of Credit forms are available online and at the AV Department.
- Use of the multimedia projectors and Laptop Computer attracts a refundable deposit of $500.00 each per class session applicable to NCU faculty and staff and a cost of $500.00 to students without a signed Transfer of Credit Form from their department. Note that the deposit will not be charged if the projector and/or the laptop computer and their/its accessories are returned in the condition rented. However, if the equipment and/or accessories is/are damaged or lost, a repair or replacement cost will be charged.
- Persons requesting AV equipment should be prepared to take them from the Audio-visual Lab to the designated location of use and back.
- Audio-Visual equipment will not be lent out when it is raining, unless properly secured in the presence of the Audio-Visual worker or staff and transported to the designated location of use.
- AV equipment and classroom are booked on a per class session basis. Reserve, West Indian, and Reference AV material are loaned for two (2) hours and General AV material loaned for two (2) days.
Circulation
The Circulation Desk is located on the ground floor of the library, in the foyer. It houses the Reserve Book Collection and the West Indian Collection and is responsible for the issuing of general, reserve and West Indian books and the registration of patrons.
Reserve Book Collection (RES)
The Reserve Book Collection houses textbooks and other materials recommended by lecturers. It is located at the Circulation Desk. It also includes some books written by Ellen G. White. These books may be borrowed, for use in the library, for one or two hours.
West Indian Collection (WIND)
The West Indian Collection is located at the Circulation Desk and contains materials written about the West Indies, and /or written by West Indians, and/or published in the Caribbean.
It also houses dissertations from faculty, staff and students.
Circulation Policies
- Employees and students of NCU with a valid NCU ID card are eligible borrowers. This ID card should be presented for all transactions. However, students must also present their class authorization cards for the semester before they can borrow books.
- Visitors are allowed to read and photocopy library material but are not allowed to borrow books to take out of the library.
- Special groups are allowed to borrow books under unique arrangements.
- All University students, faculty and staff are eligible for membership. Students are required to register at the Circulation Desk on presentation of valid authorization and ID cards. Faculty and staff members are required to present a valid ID card or a letter of introduction from the relevant department. Details such as name, address and department are required.

- Undergraduate students – four (4) books for two (2) weeks
- Graduate Students – six (6) books for two weeks
- Staff – four (4) books for two (2) weeks
- Faculty – ten (10) books for one (1) month
- Reserve and West Indian Books – one (1) and two (2) hours
- Reference 3-day Loans – three (3) days
- AV material
- Reserve, West Indian, Reference – two (2) hours
- General – two (2) weeks
- Notices will be sent out for overdue books at the end of the semester.
- A fine is charged for overdue books.
- General lending - $10.00 for each book per day (when the library is open)
- Reserve and West Indian books - $10.00 for each book for every 15 minutes overtime per day that the library is open
- Students who have overdue books or owe fines will have their borrowing privileges revoked until their accounts are cleared.
- Books are checked out and checked in at the Circulation Desk. Patrons should ensure that their loans are properly checked out when borrowing and properly checked in when returning, before leaving the desk.
W.D. Carter Library of Economic Development (CARTER)
This library was established to commemorate the life of entrepreneur, Wentworth D. Carter. The W. D. Carter Library of Economic Development located on the main floor, houses information on economic development in the Caribbean. It is also via this library that the nationally renowned W.D. Carter lecture series are planned. The series presents lectures by specially invited guest experts and NCU lecturers on economic issues in Jamaica and the Caribbean.
Collection Development
Working with the Acquisitions Librarian, the Collection Development Librarian ensures that the collection compliments the university’s curriculum in the best way possible.
Aquisitions
The Acquisitions area is located in the Technical Services Department and is responsible for acquiring materials selected for the library collection.
Technical Services
The Technical Services Department is responsible for processing materials purchased for the library or those received as gifts. This department is also responsible for the promotion of the collection, minor repairs and the Audio-Visual Department. Only library staff is allowed in this area.
Photocopying
The Photocopy room is located on the main floor of the library. Copies can be made at a current cost of six to nine dollars ($6.00 - $9.00) per copy.
